Former University of Hawaii middle blocker Taylor Averill is having a pretty solid year. He made the playoffs of Italy’s Serie A at the conclusion of the 2017-18 professional season with his Power Volley Milano team and then hit the road with the U.S. Men’s National Team for Volleyball Nations League and World Championships.

After enjoying a stellar career at the University of Southern California, where he set a school record for most 20-plus-dig matches in a season, Tri Bourne turned his attention to beach volleyball and has been a fixture on the podium of pro events ever since. In 2013, the Oahu, Hawaii, native was named the AVP Newcomer of the Year as well as the Most Improved Player. The following year, he teamed up with John Hyden and was named AVP Offensive Player of the Year and the FIVB Top Rookie. Last year, Bourne and Hyden won bronze twice and silver once on the World Tour, including a third-place finish at the World Tour Finals. The duo also (sort of but not really) qualified for the Rio Olympics, getting denied a spot because of the "country quota" rule. Before the start of this season, the 27-year-old Bourne seemed poised to start dominating the AVP and FIVB tours, but a freak illness has (momentarily) derailed his plans.

Jerritt Elliott's Texas team might just be the No. 1 team in the nation heading into the 2017 NCAA women's volleyball season. The Longhorns welcome back 2016 First Team All-Americans Ebony Nwanebu and Micaya White and celebrate the return of All-American middle blocker Chiaka Ogbogu, who sat out in 2016 due to academic ineligibility, in addition to bringing in the top-rated recruiting class in the country.

Typically, the bottom seed in the qualifier would be hard-pressed to make the main draw of an Association of Volleyball Professionals tournament. This week in Huntington Beach, CA, however, the bottom seed of the women's qualifier could very well win the whole thing.
