Texas outside hitter Lexi Sun, the top-ranked recruit in the country one year ago, has decided to transfer after just her freshman season, the school announced on Friday.

The 6-foot-2 Sun, who averaged 3.27 kills per set along with a .277 hitting percentage during Texas’ run to the Elite Eight last season, quickly established herself as a go-to pin hitter for the Longhorns, earning All-Big 12, All Southwest Region, and AVCA Honorable Mention All-America honors.

"I want to thank all of the people that have impacted me throughout my time here at the University of Texas," Sun said in a statement released by Texas. "I know the Longhorn volleyball program will continue to be successful and I wish them nothing but the best.”

Neither Sun nor head coach Jerritt Elliott cited reasons for the departure, although Elliott's statement indicated the transfer "is about Lexi and her family."

Sun was the lynchpin to the Longhorns' stellar 2017 recruiting class, which also included setter Ashley Shook. She came to Texas out of Santa Fe Christian School in Encinitas, California, where she was named the Gatorade National Player of the Year as a senior.

Sun is the second player to leave the program this offseason, following the exit of libero Olivia Zelon. She will have three years of eligibility remaining at her next school.

The loss of Sun, whose kills-per-set average was second on the team only to Micaya White (3.4), coupled with the graduations of senior All-Americans Chiaka Ogbobu and Ebony Nwanebu and all-time digs leader Cat McCoy, leaves Elliott with huge roster holes to fill. White and Yaazie Bedart-Ghani are the only returning outside hitters on the team.

“We think (Lexi) is a wonderful young lady," Elliott said in a statement. "We have a lot of respect for her and wish her the best of luck.”

FloVolleyball interviewed Sun after she won the Gatorade award before her time in Austin.
