Recruiting 101 With Amy: My Role Vs. My Parents' Role

Kid Versus Parents' Role In Recruiting

When it comes to the recruiting process, parents often end up doing a large portion of the work, and to be honest, it’s the player who needs to be putting in more effort to get the most out of the process. It’s the player’s future, not the parents' or the recruiting coordinator's.

So what role does or should each person play in the recruiting process? See the chart below for a suggested way to break up the tasks involved in being recruited.

Evaluating player's level X Really helps with knowing where to start the research process based on physical stats and playing ability.
Researching schools of interest X X Mostly the player, because it is his or her college experience.
Initiating contact with coaches X Really important that the player contacts the coach first. It needs to be personal.
Email X X X Parents and recruiting coordinators can send emails on behalf of the player, but only after the player initiated contact.
Phone calls X X The recruiting coordinator should only make calls after player has initiated contact. If parents have questions they want answered, they should have the player ask them.
