Big Ten Snapshots: Penn State's One-Of-A-Kind Libero Leads A Young Group

In the world of NCAA women’s volleyball, there’s no conference quite like the Big Ten. Heading into the 2019 season, seven of the 14 teams appeared in the AVCA preseason top-25 poll. Five of those seven ranked in the top 10.

This week, we're bringing you a quick rundown of all 14 teams in the Big Ten, so you can know what to expect as teams get the season rolling this weekend.

Penn State Nittany Lions

2018 Record: 26-8 (14-6 Big Ten)

2018 Postseason: NCAA Tournament Regional Finals

AVCA National Preseason Ranking: 8

Big Ten Preseason Ranking: 4

Penn State always has plenty of talent on its roster, but this year, instead of an All-American outside hitter or future Olympic setter serving at the team’s star, it’s the Kendall White show in State College. The libero heads into her senior season as the reigning Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and is already ranked fourth on the program’s career digs list with 1,520.

Most of all, White’s leadership qualities will be in high demand this fall, after the Nittany Lions graduated both starting outside hitters, Nia Reed and Taylor Leath, and setter Bryanna Weiskircher.

Now a sophomore, Gabby Blossom will take over the setting duties, while her classmates Kaitlyn Hord, Serena Gray, and Jonni Parker are back for another year after standout rookie seasons. Parker led the team in kills and points in 2018 and was named Big Ten Freshman of the year, and both Hord and Parker earned preseason All-Big Ten recognition.

Competition for the starting outside hitter spots will be fierce, with five athletes—freshmen Lauren Clark, Gabi Bailey, and Sydney Ferguson and sophomores Amanda Phegley and Allyson Cathey—battling for two spots on the court.

Nittany Lions fans should highlight the third weekend of the season, when Penn State hosts the Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenge and welcomes No. 1 Stanford and No. 11 Oregon to State College.
