Big Ten Snapshots: New Blood Rejuvenates Ohio State

In the world of NCAA women’s volleyball, there’s no conference quite like the Big Ten. Heading into the 2019 season, seven of the 14 teams appeared in the AVCA preseason top-25 poll. Five of those seven ranked in the top 10.

FloVolleyball will be your go-to spot to stream Big Ten matches this season. Click here for the schedule of matches.

This week, we're bringing you a quick rundown of all 14 teams in the Big Ten, so you can know what to expect as teams get the season rolling this weekend.

Ohio State Buckeyes

2018 Record: 12-20 (3-17 Big Ten)

2018 Postseason: N/A

AVCA National Preseason Ranking: N/A

Big Ten Preseason Ranking: 8

Ohio State has not had a great past couple seasons. After making three consecutive Sweet 16s from 2014 to 2016, the Buckeyes spent two years battling injury after injury and finished both 2017 and 2018 with a losing record.

But this year, there’s plenty of reason for optimism. First of all, the Buckeyes will get to play in home matches in the brand-new Covelli Center. Secondly they lost just two major contributors to graduation in Audra Appold and Olivia Dailey, and they bring in six true freshmen, a recruiting class that ranks fourth in the country, according to VolleyballMag.com. In that group, you’ve got three Volleyball Mag Fab 50 honorees (Gabby Gonzales, Kylie Murr, and Machaela Podraza), a First Team Under Armour All-American (Gonzales), a member of the Puerto Rican Junior National Team (Cecilia Rocafort), a two-time state Gatorade Player of the Year (Gonzales), and a three-time state Gatorade Player of the Year (Jenaisya Moore).

Returners to keep an eye on include sophomore outside hitter Mia Grunze, who was having a great rookie season until she got bit by the injury bug; libero Hannah Gruensfelder, the team’s digs leader in 2018 with 369; and middle Lauren Witte, who played every single match and set in 2018, collecting 294 kills and 90 blocks.
