Boise State senior outside hitter Sierra Nobley terminated a season-high 23 kills and set a new school career-kills record on Thursday night in the Broncos' match with BYU, but it was the No. 10-ranked Cougars who walked away with the 3-0 victory, 25-19, 26-24, 26-24.
BYU's junior outside hitter Veronica Jones-Perry led the visiting team with 15 kills. Sophomore McKenna Miller added eight with only one error, hitting .304. Redshirt freshman middle Kennedy Redding also put away eight kills, hitting .375, and senior middle Cosey Burnett led the match with eight blocks.
Boise State's libero Maddi Osburn's 23 digs led the match and helped the Broncos out-dig the Cougars 56 to 42.
"The second and third sets were fantastic volleyball," Boise State head coach Shawn Garus said. "We just weren't able to close them out. [BYU's] No. 10 for a reason. They have a lot of weapons, and they don't get rattled."
The ninth-year head coach was particularly proud of his record-setting senior outside hitter.
"It's an unbelievable career record, and it's great that she did it tonight with a match against No. 10," he said. "I thought at times she was the best player in the gym, and that was incredible to see."
Today, the competition at the Boise State Invitational continues with Missouri taking on Sacramento State at 1 PM ET. Then Missouri takes the court again versus BYU at 7:30 PM ET, and Boise State faces Sacramento State at 9:30 PM ET in the last match of the evening.
