Since 2011, Anne Kordes has been at the helm of the University of Louisville women’s volleyball program. A former Cardinals setter who led the U of L to the Round of 16 in her senior year, Kordes brought the same kind of success with her to Louisville as a coach. Under Kordes, Louisville volleyball has an overall record of 130-60 and has won four conference championships.
But the Kordes era of Louisville volleyball is coming to an end, Kordes announced that she will resign at the conclusion of the 2016 season.
The fact that this year’s Louisville squad is struggling more than usual, with a record of 9-18 overall and 4-13 in the ACC, seems not to be what led Kordes to this decision. Her motivations were much more personal.
“There are aspects of every job that can be challenging and at this point in my life I am finding it hard to be the mom I want to be to my daughter because of the grind and travel of the recruiting season,” Kordes said in a release from the Louisville Athletic Department. “There is no way around it if you want to be successful as recruiting is your life-line. My struggle isn't the work, it's the work out of town.”
Kordes’ daughter Mary, was born in 2013. In a blog published on the AVCA website in 2015, Kordes said, “Everybody has a different yearning – an instinctual need. There are a lot of us out there who want to be parents. There are also a lot of people out there who are surprised at how much they love being parents! For me it was never a take it or leave it situation. It was going to be one of those things that I think at the end of the day I would have been sick to my stomach not to have children simply because of my job. And if my job kept me from having children, I don’t think I would be as good at it.”
But after giving parenting and coaching a Division I women’s volleyball team a go for three years, Kordes has decided she must make a choice, and for her, it was family first.
