Two down-to-the-wire three-set matches capped the 2016 Manhattan Beach Open, with Emily Day and Brittany Hochevar and Casey Patterson and Jake Gibb emerging victorious.

The 21-16, 19-21, 19-17 defeat of Lane Carico and Summer Ross in the women's final marked Hochevar's first AVP title and both women's first Manhattan Beach Open win. To make the victory even more incredible, the 2016 MBO was only Hochevar and Day's second tournament playing together this year (fifth all time).

On the men's side, Rio-bound duo Gibb and Patterson beat Tri Bourne and John Hyden in the championship match 17-21, 21-18, 16-14 to earn Patterson his first plaque on the pier. The victory marked Gibb's third Manhattan Beach Open title.

Gibb and Patterson advanced to the final after their semifinal opponents Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena forfeited due to a minor calf injury suffered by Dalhausser at 10-10 in the first set.

Lauren Fendrick and Brooke Sweat, the third Olympics-bound duo competing in Manhattan Beach, fell in the semifinals to Carico and Ross. The MBO was Fendrick and Sweat's first AVP event of the season.

The AVP will take August off and conclude its 2016 season with the Chicago Open, September 1-4.
