Siblings On The AVP
You'll often hear the volleyball community is one big family, but for quite a few of the players currently competing on the AVP tour, that statement is quite literal. Seven sibling teams have competed on the AVP tour so far this year or are signed up to compete in AVP Seattle. There’s even one sister-brother duo competing on tour at the same time. Get to know these AVP sibs below.

Taylor and Trevor Crabb

nullWe can’t seem to stop talking about this duo of Hawaii natives and Long Beach State alums. Taylor, 24, and Trevor, 26, made their professional beach volleyball debut in 2011. Taylor then returned to the indoor game to finish out his collegiate career and play overseas for a couple seasons while Trevor played on the beach tour with a few different partners. Halfway through the 2015 season, the brothers teamed up full-time. That move has paid off in a big way. Since then, they’ve collected one second-place and three third-place finishes on the AVP tour and two ninths on the FIVB. They also landed a Rox Volleyball sponsorship and are represented by Premier Management Group (PMG Sports).

After the AVP Huntington Beach Open where the Crabbs lost narrowly to Casey Patterson and Jake Gibb, Patterson gave the brothers serious props. “These guys are the future,” he said. “These kids are so good. Great players, great chemistry. Really fun match.”

Riley and Maddison McKibbin

Known as the "Beard Bros," this duo of USC alums played indoors professionally in Europe before committing to the beach full-time. Maddison, 25, and Riley, 27, qualified for the main draw in their AVP debut at the 2015 New York City Open and finished 13th. The Hawaii natives and products of Punahou High School earned a career-high ninth-place finish at the 2016 Huntington Beach Open thanks to a three-set victory over Casey Jennings and Billy Kolinske.

Brian and Tim Bomgren

It may surprise you that Brian, 32, and Tim, 28, found success on the AVP tour when you learn they hail from and still live in Minnesota. But this duo of brothers has volleyball in their blood. Their father, Wally, trained with the national team in the late 1970s and now coaches girls volleyball at Woodbury’s New Life Academy in Woodbury, Minnesota. Brian played collegiately at Bethel University while Tim played at Wisconsin-Eau Claire. They’ve played professionally on the beach since 2011, fitting in as many tournaments as they can around full-time careers (Brian is a quantitative portfolio manager at Thrivent Asset Management and Tim is a technical lead at Quantum Retail Technology). In 2015, they earned a career-high third in the New Orleans Open.

Tracy Lindquist Jones and Katie Lindquist Jameson

nullThe Lindquist sisters of Fountain Valley, California, have played 102 pro tournaments together. Tracy and Katie are both only 5-6, but their height disadvantage hasn’t stopped them from enjoying successful collegiate and professional volleyball careers. Tracy set for the 2002 USC team that went undefeated on its way to the national championship, and Katie played at San Diego. The sisters played regularly on the AVP tour between 2003 and 2010, and recorded two third-place finishes in 2008. Earlier this season, the duo made their first pro beach appearance in five years by playing in the AVP Huntington Beach tournament. They ripped through the qualifier and finished ninth.

Billy and Julie Kolinske

Another pair of Midwest all-stars, Billy and Julie Kolinske hail from the great state of Wisconsin. Julie, 24, played for University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee from 2011-2014, where she is a member of the 1,000-kills club, and her older brother Billy, 29, played basketball at Wisconsin-Whitewater. Billy qualified for his first AVP main draw in 2013 with Steven VanderWerp. Since then, the 6-6 blocker has attracted the attention of some high-level players on tour. This year, he formed a partnership with Casey Jennings.

Mark, Steve and Jim Van Zwieten

This trio of Florida bros has enjoyed a presence in elite beach volleyball since the mid-90s, when oldest (and at 6-5, tallest) brother Jim, 38, began playing on the AVP. Jim achieved his highest domestic finish in 1999 with Mark Addy by taking 13th in the Muskegon Open. He also played on the FIVB tour intermittently from 1996 to 2006 and posted a career-high 25th at the 1996 Carolina Beach Open in Puerto Rico. Steve, 32, partnered with Jim in his first AVP tournament in 2002, but in recent years has more frequently played with Mark, 28. Steve and Mark have both represented the U.S. in international age-group championships.

Madison and McKenna Witt

The twins from Tucson, Arizona, will make their AVP debut in Seattle. Two of the top beach volleyball recruits in their class, the rising University of Arizona seniors went 26-4 at the No.1 spot for the Wildcats this spring. They used their chemistry to defeat some of the most competitive NCAA pairs in the country, including Megan and Nicole McNamara from UCLA, Heidi Dyer and Taylor Racich of Pepperdine and Bianca Arellano and Whitney Follette of Arizona State.

Jessica and Sarah Mendoza

This pair of former college athletes has three pro beach tournaments under its belt. Sisters from Winter Park, Florida, Sarah, 27, and Jessica, 25, finished 13th in the NVL Panama City tournament last year and played in the qualifiers of both AVP tournaments so far this year. Jessica played beach at Florida International, where she competed at the No. 2 spot with Maryna Samoday in 2013 as junior and with various partners her senior year. Sarah played indoor in college at Kentucky and Rollins College.
