Celebrate Thursday the right way with these endlessly entertaining throwback videos of volleyball days gone by. See Karch Kiraly ball out with the indoor national team at the 1988 Olympics and then battle on the beach versus rival Sinjin Smith, and then take a virtual journey through some of the best moments in NCAA women’s volleyball with the 1997 and 2001 national championship matches.

1984 Los Angeles Olympics Women’s Gold Medal Match: China vs. USA

The 1984 U.S. women’s national team featured Rita Crockett, Debbie Green, Flo Hyman and Paula Weishoff, but the stacked American squad still couldn’t overcome the challenge of the talented team from China.



1988 Olympics Men’s Gold Medal Match: USA vs. USSR

A heated battle between the rival Americans and Soviets. See Karch Kiraly and Steve Timmons lead the U.S. squad to the country’s first volleyball Olympic medal.



1991 AVP Seal Beach Men’s Final: Sinjin Smith and Randy Stoklos vs. Karch Kiraly and Kent Steffes

Another legendary rivalry that has gone down in volleyball history, Karch and Sinjin never wanted to lose to each other. The stakes only got higher when you added the physical Stoklos and explosive Steffes into the mix.



1993 AVP Phoenix Open Men’s Final: Tim Hovland and Mike Dodd vs. Karch Kiraly and Kent Steffes

Hovland is well known as one of the biggest personalities ever to play the beach game, and this match features two of the most iconic partnerships of all time facing off against each other.



1997 NCAA Women’s Volleyball National Championship: Penn State vs. Stanford

Today, Penn State and Stanford lead all NCAA women’s volleyball programs with seven and six national championships, respectively. In 1997, the two powerhouses met in the national final, with Stanford looking to repeat and Penn State playing for its first title.



2001 NCAA Women’s Volleyball National Championship: Stanford vs. Long Beach State

The 2001 Stanford squad, which featured Logan Tom and Ogonna Nnamani, took on undefeated Long Beach State, led by Tayyiba Haneef and Brittany Hochevar, in the 2001 NCAA final.



2004 Olympics Women’s Bronze Medal Match: Holly McPeak and Elaine Youngs vs. Natalie Cook and Nicole Sanderson

Knocked out by Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings in the semifinals, McPeak and Youngs take on Australians Natalie Cook and Nicole Sanderson for bronze in McPeak’s final Olympics.
