Future Team USA All-Stars In Lucerne For U21 Champs
Three American duos are competing in this week's FIVB U21 Beach Volleyball Championships in Lucerne, Switzerland.

Three American duos made it to the main draw of the FIVB U21 Beach Volleyball Championships in Lucerne, Switzerland. The competition, which kicked off with the qualifier on May 11, will conclude Monday with the men’s and women’s semifinals and the gold- and bronze-medal matches.
Competing for Team USA in the women’s tournament are Abril Bustamente, Susannah (Zana) Muno, Sarah Sponcil and Torrey Van Winden. On the men’s side, Cameron Rodrigues, Kyle Skinner, Nathanael Vander Meer and Benjamin Vaught all made the journey to Lucerne, but Rodrigues and Skinner lost in the second round of the qualifier.
Bustamente and Muno, who had to win three matches in the qualifier to make it to the main draw, both recently finished their freshman NCAA beach volleyball seasons. Bustamente attends USC, where she partnered with sophomore Jenna Bolton at the No. 4 spot, went 27-8 overall for the season and helped the Trojans claim the inaugural NCAA beach volleyball title. Muno started at the setter position for the UCLA indoor program and collected a team-high 924 assists. In her first college beach season, Muno paired up with junior Jessyka Ngauamo and the duo went undefeated at the No. 4 spot.
Another beach and indoor star, Sponcil plays at Loyola Marymount. In 2015, she and Betsi Meter Flint partnered at the No. 1 spot and finished second the AVCA Collegiate Sand Championship pairs tournament. This season, however, Sponcil redshirted.
Van Winden, a senior at Vintage High School in Napa, California, chose not to play high school or club ball in her final prep year to recover from some nagging knee injuries and play beach overseas. She will attend UCLA in the fall.
Sponcil and Van Winden won the gold medal at the Four Nations U21 tournament in Sydney, Australia, on March 22.
Vander Meer plays at Davenport University in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he led the squad with 634 kills as a freshman this spring. Vander Meer’s partner Vaught is a product of Huntington Beach High School and The HBC club program. He's committed to Hawaii.
