One of the most famous volleyball players in the United States won't be in Rio this summer. And yeah, she also hung up her spandex long ago.

Amy Schumer, one of this country's most well-known comedians, has something not so well known about her: She was a standout volleyball player in high school and once aspired to play in college.

This week, Schumer posted her (very grainy) high-school volleyball recruiting video on Instagram. But Schumer appeared to have some skills with her serve. She played outside hitter, middle hitter and right side at South Shore HS in Rockville Centre, N.Y., per Perez Hilton, and was the captain of her varsity team.

Schumer, now 35 years old, wanted to play college volleyball, but when she went to Towson in Baltimore--a Division I school--she realized it was not to be. Her height wasn't going to make that a realistic possibility.

"I wanted to play volleyball in college," Schumer told the Baltimore Sun in 2013. "I played real competitively in high school. But then I realized they recruited these chicks from Stockholm who were, like, towering over me. I'm 5-7 and an outside hitter, and they were like, 'You could maybe try and play back row.'"

It all worked out fine for Schumer, who spent time in New York City and Long Island growing up. Obviously. She's an A-list celebrity now. Schumer has been nominated for five Emmy Awards, had a hit movie this year in "Trainwreck," and has taken home honors for her writing and standup comedy.

Schumer hasn't forgotten her roots, though. She went back to her old high school last year for a feature on CBS. The first topic of discussion? The tiny shorts volleyball players wore.



"People would come to our games just because we wore underwear," Schumer said. "We played volleyball in underwear. … Our games were packed. When we started wearing spandex, attendance [went] way down."

Schumer hasn't played indoor volleyball in some time, but she did tell US Magazine last year that she still does play on the beach. Maybe the next photos she posts on Instagram will be her diving for a dig.
