Rising Star: 2020 Munciana OH Lexie Almodovar

Rising Star: 2020 Munciana OH Lexie Almodovar

As an outside hitter, Lexie Almodovar gets plenty of sets. Instead of being predictable and hitting the same shot over and over, she sees the position as an opportunity to shake things up. The 5-foot-7 outside hitter not only hits angle and line but also finds ways to put the ball on the floor with a variety of off-speed and off-the-block shots as well.

It’s this mindset that makes Almodovar so effective on the outside. Though her hitting is a big part of her game, she’s also a great passer and a fierce competitor on defense. Munciana, 15’s Lorax competes in the AAU Tournament next week and goes in as the fourth seed overall.

FloVolleyball: What’s your favorite thing about playing your position?

Almodovar: I really like how competitive the position is. Hitting outside, you get set the most balls and you get a lot of chances to score, master your shots, and improve your game.

When did you start playing volleyball?

I started when I was 7 and started right up with Munciana. Also, both my parents played collegiately and my dad, Norman, pursued a professional career. (Both of Lexie’s parents played at Indiana Purdue, Fort Wayne.)

What’s the best part about being on your team?

I love my teammates. They are all so supportive of me and each other, and we are all a big family. Most of us have been playing together since we were 10, so it’s like having a bunch of sisters. That makes it more fun to play.

Who inspires you?

Definitely my coach this season [Sarah Roush], because she’s been the first coach who has believed in me – to see the potential I have. She pushes us to be our best on and off the court and teaches us a lot of life lessons. It’s nice to have a coach that cares about you on and off the court and about the person you become in both.

Do you have a pre-game ritual or a way you focus yourself before a match?

I love listening to music before I play. I just stay focused on the match ahead of me and plug in my headphones.

Do you have a favorite quote or motivational saying?

Our team is the Lorax, so we go by the Lorax quote:

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not.”

It’s Sarah’s whole philosophy. It basically means that working hard has to come from you. It won’t be easy, especially by yourself, so you have to do it together.

Where are you in the recruiting process?

I’m going on a few visits this summer, and I’ve talked to several coaches. I have a lot of opportunities and don’t want to rush into anything.

How would your friends and family describe you?

Everyone always tells me I’m really hardworking and will always accept a challenge.

How would you describe yourself?

I think I’m really competitive. I always want to win and do my best for myself and for my team to come out with the win.
