Rising Star: 2018 Libero Samantha Davis

null

Like many young athletes, Samantha Davis discovered her sport of choice through one of her parents -- specifically her father Jamie, who played volleyball growing up. He passed along his love of the game to Samantha.

Samantha, a 5-foot-6 libero from Wilmington, Delaware, has started on her Ursuline Academy squad since her freshman year of high school. A senior now, she should be the best yet. Ursuline finished third in state Samantha’s sophomore year and second in 2016. This year, the libero will be looking to lead her team to a victory in its final match of the season.

Why did you originally start playing volleyball?

My dad played volleyball when he was growing up, and he introduced the sport to me at a very young age. I loved it and wanted to continue to get better.

How old were you when you started playing?

I started playing volleyball on a team in fourth grade, but I started practicing at a much younger age.

Why did you become a libero?

When I was younger I used to play six positions, but as I grew older, defense came more naturally to me, and my coach suggested that I pursue that position.

What do you like about being a libero?

I love taking on that leadership role in the back row and giving a pass that allows my setter to put up a great set so the hitter can get a good swing.

Where are you in the recruiting process?

I have had Division I offers, but I am not committed.

What schools have you talked to or visited?

Some of the schools I have talked to are from the Big East Conference, the Colonial Athletic Association, and the Big 12.

What are you looking for in a college?

I am looking for a medium sized school. I want to be able to have that student/professor relationship, but I’m very open minded to larger schools if it’s the right fit. I would like to go to a school where, when you walk outside of campus, there is an abundance of activities and places to go to. Lastly, I plan on studying psychology, so this school would have to have a good program for that area of study.

What's your high school team like this year?

This high school season is going to be very challenging. This year we are going to be held to a very high standard, but there is no doubt in my mind that with my hardworking and talented teammates, that we will meet or exceed those expectations. Our team is honestly a family, and I am really looking forward to a successful season with every one of my teammates.

How would your teammates describe you?

Hard-working, dedicated, and a leader

What are your pregame rituals?

Listening to music to get ready for the game!

Do you have any volleyball superstitions?
Since the middle of my freshman year, I have worn the same white sparkly headband for every high school game.

Who would play you in a movie about your life?

Hayden Panettiere.

Who's your volleyball role model?

[Former national team libero] Nicole Davis.

What's your dream vacation?

Bora Bora.

What's the best thing about being a high school senior?
Being able to share some of my last experiences in high school with some of my best friends, including our last homecoming, prom, and graduation. I am really looking forward to new experiences, opportunities, and starting a new chapter of my life.
