Rising Star: 2022 Middle Blocker Morgan Colyer

2022 Rising Star Morgan Colyer Has Big Plans

A lot of young athletes dream of making it to the next level. Perhaps earning a college scholarship in their sport or going on to play in the Olympics. Morgan Colyer, however, just wants to do something her mother (a former collegiate volleyball player) never did--win a national championship with her college team. And speaking of college volleyball, she’d like to play that, too.

The 5’11 ½ 12-year-old daughter of two former Long Beach State student-athletes started playing volleyball just one year ago and has progressed quite a bit since then. Playing on a 15s team has afforded her valuable opportunities and lessons to learn from bigger and more experienced players, and Colyer is soaking everything up like a sponge.

When did you begin playing volleyball?

I started playing when I was 11, so last year. I started playing because my mom played and it looked like fun. [Morgan’s mother, Nique Crump, was an All-America for Long Beach State in the 90s.]

Do you play any other sports?

Right now I also play sand volleyball and during [indoor] off-season, I play school basketball and soccer.

Who inspires you?

Definitely my mom, and Kerri Walsh. My mom helps me with everything and drives me to practice--she’s always been a role model for me. Kerri Walsh is such a good athlete and a mom and I want to do that.

Any crazy sports or volleyball goals you have for the future?

I really want to win the Final Four with my college team and maybe someday go pro--we’ll see where life takes me.

What kind of things do you like to do in the summer?

I like going to the pool with my brother and sister and riding bikes with my friends. For the past two years I’ve gone to the Sierra College volleyball camp.

What is your favorite subject in school and why?

Definitely math because I’m good at it and it’s fun--I’m a mathy person.

Do you have goals to play at the next level, perhaps in college?

I definitely want to play at the next level. I just entered my profile online and got my first recruiting letter this week.

What’s your club team like?

They are all 15 years old and they have helped me improve my skills because they are older and bigger players. They have taught me things like hitting around the block, not just straight on. As a person, they help me to be more kind; they are a really nice team.
