Highlights From Day Two Of The Montreux Volley Masters

The second day of competition at the 2017 Montreux Volley Masters featured Thailand and Germany’s debut at the event and repeat performances for Poland, China, the Netherlands, and Brazil.
 
The first match of the day pitted Thailand against Poland, with the European squad coming out on top 3-1 (25-17, 22-25, 25-23, 27-25).
 
Thailand, who made it to the championship of the 2016 Montreux Volley Masters tournament, held the advantage in digs 64 to 51, but Poland more than made up for that with 14 blocks to Thailand’s six.
 
Poland’s star playing in the match was 21-year-old opposite Malwina Smarzek, who away 27 points. Pimpichaya Kokram and Chatchu-On Moksri each contributed 17 points for Thailand.
 
China continued its winning ways with a 3-2 (25-27, 25-22, 25-16, 17-25, 15-11) victory over Netherlands, which pushed the reigning Olympic gold medalist to a 2-0 record in Pool A.
 
With 66 digs, China out-performed the Netherlands by nine, but the Dutch out-blocked China 14 to 13. Celeste Plak led the Netherlands’ squad and the match with 24 points, while China’s Xiaotong Liu and the Netherlands’ Nika Daalderop each tallied 17 points.
 
The final match of the day was the most thrilling. Brazil and Germany went back and forth all the way to five sets, with Germany snagging the victory, a huge upset for world No. 13-ranked Germany over No. 4-ranked Brazil. The final scores of the match were 25-17, 20-25, 25-22, 23-25, 15-13.
 
Both teams blocked fiercely, with Germany leading the final stat line 18 to 16. Germany also led with 74 digs to Brazil’s 64.
 
Germany’s Louisa Lippmann led with 21 points, while Brazil’s Tandara Caixeta tallied 19.
 
Day three will feature another trio of matches, with Netherlands and Switzerland kicking things off at 10:30 AM ET, and Germany vs. Thailand and Argentina vs. China taking place subsequently.
