After securing the top seed for the California Interscholastic Federation Southern California Open Division playoffs, the road for Torrey Pines of San Diego ending the season No. 1 in the nation in the Flo50 national rankings is a little bit easier.

The Falcons, who were placed No. 1 in the most recent Flo50 two weeks ago, gained that advantage after defeating previous No. 5 Cathedral Catholic of San Diego last Saturday in the CIF San Diego Section Open Division championship. They won 25-19, 25-23, 26-24 in topping a squad that earlier this season won the major division championship at the Durango Fall Classic in Las Vegas.

Even earlier than that, Torrey Pines posted a head-to-head victory at home over Redondo (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and even though Redondo hasn’t been at full strength in some of its matches that was enough for the Falcons to get that top seed. They still have to win two SoCal Open Division matches to reach the CIF Open Division state final but both will be on their home court.

Redondo, still No. 2 in the Flo50, showed its potential national No. 1 lineup in defeating previous No. 7 Mater Dei of Santa Ana last Saturday for the CIF Southern Section Division I title. Mater Dei was going for its third straight crown in that division, but fell to the Sea Hawks 25-19, 25-16, 16-25 and 25-21. Those two teams will meet again in the SoCal Open semifinals on Saturday. Neither one has had to win an earlier match to get there, either, as the CIF only placed five teams in its SoCal Open bracket. The other two are national No. 7 Cathedral Catholic and national No. 8 Marymount of Los Angeles, who played each other on Wednesday night with the winner earning a shot at Torrey Pines on Saturday.

If either Torrey Pines or Redondo do not win the CIF Open Division state title on Saturday, Nov. 23, then the final No. 1 ranking in the Flo50 may go to current No. 3 New Castle (New Castle, Ind.). The Trojans ended their season at 35-1 after winning the Class 4A state title in Indiana with a 23-25, 25-15, 25-23, 25-18 triumph over Hamilton Southeastern. Under-Armour All-American Melani Shaffmaster was outstanding as usual, but the stat stars for New Castle were Laila Smith and Mabrey Shaffmaster with 20 kills each. That one loss by New Castle, though, was to Assumption of Louisville, Ky., at a tournament (only best-of-three match) and Assumption has a loss to Mater Dei of Santa Ana. Mater Dei still can come back from its loss last Saturday to Redondo and win a second straight CIF Open Division state title.

The team from the previous rankings that was eliminated from final national No. 1 contention was previous No. 3 Padua Franciscan of Ohio. Padua got all the way to its last match of the season at 28-0, but in that match was stunned by DeSales of Columbus, Ohio. DeSales wasn’t even on the bubble previously due to a couple of losses it had, but has to come way up this week. Head coach Brenden Pence’s girls beat Padua 19-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-22. Bella D’Amico led the way with 43 assists and 18 digs. DeSales also went against tradition in Ohio as usually that state’s top team comes from the Cincinnati metro region.
