With a couple of state associations around the country already finished with its high school girls volleyball championships and with more getting into later rounds, there is a sense that this week’s latest edition of the Flo50 National Girls Volleyball Rankings might be a calm before the storm.

Not much has changed since the previous Flo50 with just six new teams entering (compared to 11 the last time) and with the only movement in the top 10 courtesy of Marist of Chicago’s head-to-head win on Oct. 22 over previously unbeaten Benet Academy (Lisle, Ill.). Those two could meet again in the upcoming Illinois state playoffs.

In California, No. 1 Torrey Pines and No. 5 Cathedral Catholic continue to be on track toward playing in the CIF San Diego Section Open Division championship and then both would likely be included in the CIF Southern California Open Division regional playoffs. That latter bracket also will probably include the top four CIF Southern Section Division I placers, which heading into Wednesday’s quarterfinals was looking like No. 3 Redondo (Redondo Beach), No. 4 Marymount (Los Angeles), No. 7 Mater Dei (Santa Ana) and No. 14 Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth).

In Indiana, top-ranked teams New Castle and Yorktown already have met in a Class 4A sectional championship. New Castle was triumphant and unlike in California where losing teams in playoffs still play on that was the end of the season for Yorktown. Previous No. 18 Providence (Clarksville) also was upset in an early-round 4A matchup by Center Grove (Greenwood). In this week’s rankings, Hamilton Southeastern (Fishers) was selected to replace Providence since the Royals have a previous head-to-head win over Center Grove.

The highest ranked team to be done and already celebrating a state championship is No. 20 Kamehameha of Hawaii. The Warriors won their 22nd state title with a 3-1 win over Punahou of Honolulu for the Division I state championship. Keonilei Akana led the way in Kamehameha’s 21-25, 25-21, 25-16 and 25-21 victory with 22 kills.

On the opposite of Hawaii is Texas as that state’s playoffs have not begun yet. Regardless of the state or the stage of its playoffs, upsets will happen and should start happening soon.
