When we last updated the Flo50 national high school girls volleyball rankings, unbeaten No. 1 Assumption of Louisville, Ky., was just getting ready to host then No. 4 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) in a non-league showdown just prior to both teams being in Assumption’s Louisville Invitational Volleyball Tournament.

To say a lot has happened since then would be an understatement. Mater Dei won that match on Assumption’s home court, snapping the Rockets’ win streak at 68 matches in a row. There was no rematch in the tournament on the ensuing weekend because both Mater Dei and Assumption (as well as Kentucky No. 2 Mercy, more on that team later) were knocked off by Padua Franciscan of Parma, Ohio. Say what you will about overall strength of schedule, but if Padua Franciscan goes on to finish unbeaten with a state title and with wins over Assumption and Mater Dei to casually throw out the Bruins as a mythical national title contender would simply ignore results on the court.

Both Mater Dei, Assumption and Mercy along with 10 of the other top 11 ranked teams in California along with many of the best from Arizona, Hawaii, Utah, Nevada and Florida all converged last weekend at the prestigious Durango Fall Classic in Las Vegas. The California teams have already flexed their muscles not just with the win over Assumption but also from Redondo Union (Redondo Beach) handing Texas No. 1 Byron Nelson (Trophy Club) its only loss in 35 matches. They did so once again at Durango. In a tourney with three-set matches instead of the usual five that would be the norm in a California Interscholastic Federation playoff, there were upsets at Durango in pool play matches such as Redondo falling to James Logan (Union City, Calif.) and Torrey Pines (San Diego, Calif.) losing to Vista Murrieta (Murrieta, Calif.).

That dropped those two teams out of the championship division at Durango. Assumption made it, so did Mater Dei and so did Marymount of Los Angeles (No. 8 in the last Flo50) along with Mercy plus Cathedral Catholic (No. 16 in the last Flo50) and unbeaten Marin Catholic of Kentfield, Calif. (No. 23 in the last Flo50). When the last kill was made after last Saturday’s championship match, Cathedral Catholic reigned on top with a 20-25, 25-17, 25-23 triumph over Mercy. The Dons, who had to beat Assumption on the way to the title, were led by 6-foot-4 Lindsey Miller as the Notre Dame-bound standout was named tourney MVP.  Cathedral Catholic also will be at the Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix, Ariz., on Oct. 4-5 and actually will be there as defending champion. The Dons do have two early losses to CIF San Diego Section rival Torrey Pines, but if they were to win the Nike TOC to add to Durango and then win the CIF Open Division state title after that then being No. 1 in the nation would be well-deserved and would make sense.

Mater Dei and Marymount also will be at the Nike TOC, but the Kentucky teams aren’t in it and neither is Redondo. All five of the leading California teams will play each other in sectional playoffs (Cathedral Catholic and Torrey Pines in San Diego with Redondo, Mater Dei and Marymount in the CIF Southern Section) and then there will be two of them likely meeting for the CIF Southern California Open Division title. Redondo and Marymount just played each other on Tuesday of this week with Redondo winning 25-21, 25-23, 25-19. That was just the second loss of the season for the Sailors (who beat Mater Dei at Durango before losing to Mercy in the semifinals).

It’ll be hard for the eventual CIF Open Division state champion not to be No. 1 in the final Flo50, but the best case for a non-California team to sit there probably will come from Ohio.

This is a story that will probably have many more twists and turns. Don’t touch that remote.

On the bubble...
