Final 2016 Girls' High School Rankings

In the final match of the 2016 national high school season on Dec. 3, Archbishop Mitty of San Jose swept Santa Margarita of Rancho Santa Margarita to win the first-ever California Interscholastic Federation Open Division championship.

Mitty’s win, which was sparked by Arizona commit Candice Denny’s 17 kills, caused the team to rise up from No. 4 to No. 3 in this week’s final Flo50 national rankings but had no effect on which team claimed the final No. 1 ranking in the ASICS Flo50.

Mother McAuley of Chicago, which like Mitty is often among the top 10 teams in national ratings, assumed the No. 1 position two weeks ago when season-long leader Oak Ridge of Conroe, Texas, saw its hopes for an unbeaten season and a Texas Class 6A state title go up in flames with a loss in the state semifinals.

Mother McAuley almost was unbeaten as well, with the exception of an early-season loss to St. Joseph Academy of St. Louis, Missouri, and finished 40-1 after topping Minooka 25-19, 19-25, 25-19 in the Class 4A Illinois state final. It was the Mighty Macs’ 15th state title in program history and second under their current head coach, Jen DeJarld.

“Every [championship] is special for a different reason,” DeJarld said to the Daily Southtown after the state title victory. “It took this team a while to get on all cylinders. But once we went to Louisville and we played a real tough tournament, I saw them fight back. I saw a real strong quality in them. They’re fighters.”

Leading the way with a double-double was junior outside hitter Charley Niego, a Notre Dame commit who collected 14 kills and 15 digs. Also with a double-double was senior outside hitter Katie O'Connell, an Appalachian State commit, who had 11 kills and 13 digs. Nancy Kane tossed up a team-high 31 assists, while Emma Reilly added 14 digs.

After Mother McAuley's semifinal win over Niles West, Niego told the Chicago Tribune, “After losing the last couple of years we want to come back and win it,” and that's exactly what Mother McAuley did.

Here are the final ASICS Flo50 national rankings for the 2016 season. Congratulations to all 50 teams and to all other state championship squads from around the country.
