In the world of NCAA women’s volleyball, there’s no conference quite like the Big Ten. Heading into the 2019 season, seven of the 14 teams appeared in the AVCA preseason top-25 poll. Five of those seven ranked in the top 10.

Indiana Hoosiers

2018 Record: 16-15 (7-13)

2018 Postseason: N/A

AVCA National Preseason Ranking: N/A

Big Ten Preseason Ranking: 11

Last year, in his first season at Indiana, head coach Steve Aird led the team to seven wins in conference, six more than it managed in 2017. This year, with nine returners and just as many newcomers, the Hoosiers will look to continue that upward trend.

They’ll get a boost of momentum from the opening of Indiana’s brand-new arena, dubbed Wilkinson Hall. Top scorer Breana Edwards returns for her sophomore season after tallying a 360 kills last year, and Kendall Beerman will be looking for a big season after missing most of 2018 with a torn ACL.

Despite losing two to graduation and having three more players leave the team, Aird has grown his roster from 14 to 18 with the addition of four freshmen and five transfers.

Setter Emily Fitzner headlines the frosh group and will likely challenge returning setter Victoria Brisack for the starting spot. Aird’s transfer haul is comprised of Peyton Yelich, a middle from Virginia Tech; Megan Sloan, a former Louisville outside hitter; Arizona DS Klaire Thoman; outside/opposite Kari Zumach, who spent her freshman year at Creighton; and Jacqui Armer, previously a middle at LSU.
