The U.S. Women's National Team may have gotten off on the wrong foot in its Pan American Cup opener against Trinidad & Tobago, but the Americans corrected for the misstep emphatically, winning its opener in Santo Domingo 21-25, 25-15, 25-22, 25-15 on Sunday.

The U.S. cruised in sets two and four—and held off a Trinidad & Tobago comeback bid in the third set—to move to 1-0 despite the first set defeat.

Simone Lee led the way with 14 points on 10 kills, three aces and a block. Aiyana Whitney entered the contest following the team's hiccup in set one. All she did was score 13 points on 11 kills and a pair of blocks the rest of the way.

“We feel awesome about it,” Whitney said about getting the opening match victory. “We knew that we were going to need to work through some things in the beginning. I think we did a good job at grinding it out and finding a stretch of good plays to pull together a good win.”

USA will meet Cuba next before wrapping up pool play against Puerto Rico on Tuesday. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 5 PM CT LIVE on FloVolleyball.
