Players And Teams To Watch In A Loaded Field At JVA West Coast Cup

In Long Beach, Calif., over Memorial Day weekend, the best Southern California club volleyball programs, including WAVE, Tstreet, Coast, A4, and Sunshine, will act as the home teams of the Junior Volleyball Association’s West Coast Cup—while elite teams from all over the country journey west for one of the best tournaments of the JVA season.

Here are the teams to keep an eye out for while watching the JVA West Coast Cup LIVE on FloVolleyball, May 26-28:

18 Open

In 18 Open, a pair of teams led by some of the best setters in the country are our favorites to meet in the championship match of the West Coast Cup.

A4 Volley 18 Purple’s Devon Chang is the 2017-18 California Gatorade Player of the Year and the 2017 Orange County Player of the Year. She led her Santa Margarita High School team to the CIF Division I state title, and already this club season the UCLA recruit has helped A4 win the SCVA Qualifier, finish fifth at JVA World Challenge and 11th at USA Volleyball 18s Nationals.

Nicklin Hames serves as the leader for K2 Adidas 18 Jota, a team hailing from Knoxville, Tenn. A first-team Under Armour High School All-American, Hames has been playing on her high school’s varsity team since eighth grade, and she is a member of the U.S. Junior National Team. Before joining the reigning national champion Nebraska Husker team this fall, Hames hopes to collect a few more titles with her K2 teammates.

Already this season, K2 Adidas 18 Jota has won three tournaments: the K2 Elite Tournament, Showdown in the Smokies, and Winter Bump Elite Spartanburg. K2 Jota also placed third at the Ultra Ankle Bluegrass Tournament and fifth at JVA World Challenge.

17 Open

Three teams stand out in the 17 Open field at West Coast Cup: TAV 17 Black, Mintonette m.71, and Top Select 17 Elite Blake.

TAV 17 Black won the Asics Show Me Qualifier early last month and finished third at the Nike Midwest Qualifier in March. Head coach Ping Cao has a fully-loaded roster, featuring Division I recruits Morgan Christon (OH, Kansas), Emma Clothier (MB, Florida State), Satasha Kostelecky (MB, Rice), McKenzie Nichols (S, TCU), Noelle Piatas (OH, Miami), and Jenna Wenaas (OH, Texas A&M).

The team is ranked No. 1 in the country according to Advanced Event Systems Power Rankings.

Although ranked five places lower, Mintonette m.71 from Ohio also has a qualifier victory under its belt, in addition to second-place finishes at the Nike Midwest Qualifier, Nike President’s Day Classic, and the JVA Rock ‘n Rumble. With a roster of 100 percent Division I committed athletes, m.71 is out to prove itself against the best of the West Coast this week.

In particular, keep an eye out for Michigan-bound libero Amber Beals, and m.71’s quartet of Ohio State commits: Emily and Olivia Margolies, Madison Martinez, and Machaela Podraza.

Top Select 17 Elite Blake kicked off the season winning the OTVA MLK Showcase, before collecting additional titles at the JJVA March Open Challenge, the Disney Volleyball Showcase, and the Lone Star Classic Qualifier, where it downed KC Power 17-1 in straight sets in the final. Key players for this Florida team include Naomi Cabello (S, Texas) Lauren Davis (OH, Texas A&M), Amanda Falck (L, Miami), Jillian Thompson (MB, Houston), Burgundy Walters (Mississippi State).

16 Open

Only a month ago, TAV 16 Black and Coast 16-1 faced off against each other in the 16 Open Championship match at Lone Star Classic, and they are our top two teams to watch in this age group at West Coast Cup.

TAV 16 Black won the Lone Star match-up in three, and Coast is no doubt excited about the possibility of a rematch. Earlier in the season, Coast lost in the semifinals of the Triple Crown Invitational and won the Windy City Qualifier. The No. 1 ranked 16 Open team in the SCVA Region, Coast features 6-2 Nebraska commit Madison Endsley and 6-5 middle/opposite China Crouch, as well as BYU-bound libero Madison Allen.

TAV 16 Black is the defending USAV Junior National champion in 15 Open, with all players from last year returning, and it went undefeated on the way to the Lone Star crown last month. Watch out for Texas recruit Madison Williams and LSU recruit Paige Flickinger on the outside, and Penn State-bound Iman Ndiaye on the right pin.

15 Open

It probably goes without saying that whenever there’s a TAV team signed up for a tournament, it will be in contention for a title, and once again, in 15 Open, we’re highlighting another TAV squad.

TAV 15 Black won the 15 Open title at Lone Star without losing a single set. Setter Ashley Le runs an incredibly sophisticated offense, helping big hitters Charitie Luper and Natalie Glenn find openings in even the most well-thought-out defenses. With only four losses on the year so far, this team will be tough to stop.

But the squad with the best chance of doing so at JVA West Coast Cup might be Tstreet 15 Curtis. This Cali team won the 14 Open title last summer at USAV Nationals and took home the title at the Windy City Qualifier earlier this year. Washington-committed libero Lauren Bays holds down the back court for this team, while 6-2 middle Katelyn Smith and 6-1 outside hitter Elyse Stowell, a BYU recruit, intimidate opponents at the net.

14 Open

Hailing from opposite coasts, OTVA 14 S. Felix and SG Elite 14 RoShamBo are the top teams in this week’s 14 Open field.

Only two losses blemish the overall record of OTVA 14 S. Felix. The team won the 14 Open titles at Disney Volleyball Showcase, JVA World Challenge, and OTVA MLK Invitational, and went undefeated in the 16 Open division at the OTVA Invitational in early February.

SG Elite 14 RoShamBo won the SCVA Red Rock Rave Qualifier #2 and finished third at the Asics Show Me Qualifier. A showdown with OTVA 14 S. Felix would be a good test for SG Elite as it prepares for USAV Nationals next month.
