The Junior Volleyball Association’s Rock ‘N Rumble in Cleveland, Ohio, kicked off the 2018 JVA season, with some of top club teams in the country competing for only the first or second time this year.
Here’s a recap of what happened in the Open divisions.
In the 18 Open Division, Munciana’s stacked 18 Samurai team won the gold bracket without dropping a set the entire tournament. In the final, Samurai defeated Legacy 18 Elite 25-18, 25-16. Penn State-committed and First-Team Under Armour All-American opposite/setter Jonni Parker came up big for the Munciana squad, showing how key she’ll be for Samurai this year.

Far Out 18 Black, featuring Michigan State-bound middle Becka Poljan, and Cleveland Volleyball Company 18 Martin, finished in third with losses in the gold bracket semifinals.
In the top 17s division, Asics KIVA 17 Red battled through three-set matches in the first and second rounds of the gold bracket, but ultimately came out on top with a 25-23, 26-24 victory over Mintonette Sports m.71 in the championship match. This team, featuring Duke recruit Camille Nazor at setter and Ohio State-bound middle Rylee Rader and coached by former Louisville head coach Anne Kordes, has the pieces to be absolutely deadly this year.
Mintonette m.71, KIVA’s final opponent, had the Louisville team on the ropes. Hawaii recruit Riley Wagoner and Michigan-bound libero Amber Beals will be players to watch for the remainder of the season.
The Academy for Volleyball Cleveland Rox 17N Meredith and Cleveland Volleyball Company 17 Black finished third in 17 Open.
Mintonette Sports m.61 and its foursome of verbally committed high school sophomores put on a show in 16 Open, going to three sets only once during the tournament.
In the final, setter and Michigan recruit Scottee Johnson, Ohio State-bound middle Emily Londot, and outside Raina Terry and libero Madi Chitty (both Indiana recruits) helped Mintonette defeat Munciana 16 Ninjas, featuring MaxPreps national freshman of the year Mabrey Shaffmaster, 27-25, 25-21.
The Academy for Volleyball Cleveland 16N Reaser and PNK 16 lost in the semifinals to tie for third.
It was a three-set battle between MiElite 15 Mizuno and Cleveland Volleyball Company 15 Black in the 15 Open championship match, with MiElite coming back after losing the first set to win 22-25, 25-21, 15-13.
Mintonette Sports m.52 and Legacy 15 Elite tied for third place.
In both 14 Open and 13 Open, Asics KIVA teams came out on top, defeating Munciana teams in the championship. KIVA 14 Red defeated Munciana 14 Chipmunks in the 14 Open final, and KIVA 13 Red took down Munciana 13 Konoichis. In 12 Open, the Academy for Volleyball Cleveland Rox 12N Maggie won a three-setter over Legacy 12 Elite to take the title.
