Last night, California’s volleyball elite got their journey to Santiago Canyon College started in the CIF Open state tournament. Here is a recap of that action.

Southern California Open Division Results

No. 1 Torrey Pines def. No. 8 Corona del Mar 20-25, 25-19, 25-15, 25-14

No. 2 Mater Dei No. 7 Cathedral Catholic 25-14, 24-13, 25-18

No. 3 Marymount def. No. 6 Central 25-16, 25-20, 25-12

No. 5 Redondo Union def. No. 4 Canyon Crest Academy 3-2 (No set scores reported) 

SoCal Round 1 Surprise

When you get to the Open Division level there aren't generally a lot of surprises. By seed lines, Redondo Union defeating Canyon Crest Academy was an upset, but the Redondo squad led by USC-bound outside hitter Brooklyn Schirmer is an elite group of athletes certainly capable of going far in this tournament.

Round 1 Standouts

Torrey Pines junior Emily Fitzner had 14 kills and six digs as the Falcons defeated Corona del Mar on opening night of the state’s Open Division playoffs. 

Marymount junior Devon Newberry had 14 kills, three aces, and 10 digs as the Sailors set up a rematch with Mater Dei on Saturday evening in Santa Ana.

NorCal Round 1 Surprises

Chalk held true in the Northern California Open Division tournament so there were no really big surprises last night. 

NorCal Round 1 Standouts

In an Open Division first-round loss Saint Francis senior Mollie Ebertin had 16 kills and 17 digs.
