First-Round Results Roll In For CIF Divisions 1-5

Last night was full of upsets and heart-pounding five-set matches as teams fought for a spot the second round of CIF regional play in Divisions 1-5, which takes place Saturday. The Open Division teams all get going this evening.

SoCal D1 Round 1 Surprises

I definitely did not expect Liberty and Garces Memorial to take out Harvard-Westlake and Orange Lutheran. Those two teams pulled off impressive performances, especially considering the lengthy trips both had to make on a Wednesday evening. According to BVarsity Live, this is the first time two Bakersfield teams won D1 state tournament matches since 2004. 

SoCal D1 Round 1 Standouts

Perri Starkey had 30 kills for Garces in its five-set victory over Orange Lutheran.

Erin Anderson had 21 kills for Santiago in its five-set victory over La Jolla Country Day.

Kaitlan Tucker had 11 kills for Liberty in its four-set victory over Harvard-Westlake.

NorCal D1 Round 1 Surprise

Oak Ridge defeating Palo Alto, and Burlingame taking Lick-Wilmerding out in a sweep were the two biggest surprises in the first round of the NorCal side of the bracket.

Natalie Ballout had 10 kills and nine blocks for Burlingame as the No. 12 seed took out No. 5 Lick-Wilmerding. 

Liliana Light had 16 kills, four aces, 11 assists for No. 9 Pleasant Ridge in its sweep of No. 8 Bishop O’Dowd

Tatiana Toleafoa had 14 kills in No. 1 James Logan’s sweep of No. 16 Cosumnes Oaks

In the divisional preview, I said that Loma Linda Academy was under-seeded at No. 10, and the Roadrunners came out of San Diego County victorious, winning its first-round match for the second consecutive year.

Ellie Alden had 17 kills and hit .481 for San Marcos as it fell to Loma Linda Academy in four sets.

Ava Hudson had 15 kills and hit .440 for La Reina in a sweep of San Pedro. 

Sarah Williams had 11 kills and hit .391 for Poway in a sweep of Notre Dame
