A Steady Minnesota Topples Texas

Minnesota 2017

More than four thousand enthusiastic fans packed Gregory Gymnasium on the campus of the University of Texas to watch the Longhorns take on Minnesota in a battle of top-five volleyball programs. 2

But instead of the home team preseason No. 1 Longhorns taking it to the Gophers with their size and physicality, Minnesota did not get rattled by the burnt orange crowd and the Gophers won the match in four sets 25-21, 25-27, 26-24, 25-19.

The play of freshmen athletes on both sides of the net was significant as Minnesota opposite Stephanie Samedy led the match with 22 kills hitting .308, and Texas outside Lexi Sun led the Longhorns with 19 kills, adding 13 digs.

Texas came into the match ranked as the second-best blocking team in the country, but Minnesota out-blocked the Longhorns 12-9, marking the first time any opponent has out-blocked Texas so far this season.

"They were very disciplined with their scouting report," Texas head coach Jerritt Elliott said. "I think we could take better swings. I think we could have more of a purpose behind our swings. I think we could have a different aggression towards our swings. It's a couple of points here and a couple of points there in game three, and we've got a game five."

Next up, Minnesota (8-0) will travel to Boise, Idaho, where it will face Oregon State, Boise State, and Idaho State. Texas (6-2) takes a road trip to College Station for a mid-week match versus Texas A&M and then has the weekend off.
