Cal Baptist Disbands Men's Volleyball Program
The Cal Baptist Athletic Department has announced its decision to eliminate the men's volleyball program, effective immediately.
Just days after the 2017 NCAA Division I-II men's volleyball champion was crowned, Cal Baptist announced that it is eliminating its men's volleyball team, effective immediately.
The university is in the process of transitioning from Division II to Division I and moving to the Western Athletic Conference from the Pacific West Conference. For men's volleyball, however, the Lancers competed in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.
"Decisions to discontinue a program are never easy," CBU Director of Athletics Micah Parker said in press release. "As we look at the long-term future of our athletics department, however, we feel this decision is needed based on budgetary and competitive factors as CBU moves toward DI status."
In the same press release, CBU indicated plans to add women's beach volleyball.
CBU will honor the scholarships of current men's volleyball players and will give incoming recruits the option to accept their scholarships for one year. Any players who choose to transfer will be given the release to do so.
The MPSF men's volleyball conference is already losing six members as the Big West conference adds men's volleyball for the 2018 season. With CBU discontinuing its program, only BYU, UCLA, Pepperdine, Stanford, and USC remain, with Concordia-Irvine and Grand Canyon joining the conference next season.
