Balboa Bay Dominated Boys' Junior National Champs

Balboa Bay absolutely dominated the 2016 USAV Boys’ Junior National Championships. The Costa Mesa, California, club added five gold medals and one bronze to its all-time medal total of 76.

Balboa Bay absolutely dominated the 2016 USAV Boys’ Junior National Championships. The Costa Mesa, California, club added the 18 Open, 17 Open, 15 Open, 14 Open and 14 Club gold medals and the 17 Club bronze to its already impressive all-time total of 76 junior national championships medals in 40 years.

The Balboa Bay 18 Blue team—led by Harvard-bound setter Matt Ctvrtlik and assistant coached by Matt’s father, Olympian Bob Ctvrtlik—went undefeated on its way to the championship match where it faced Sports Performance B18 Mizuno. Balboa Bay 18 Blue won the title match 22-25, 25-20, 16-14.

In the 17 Open division, the Balboa Bay 17 Blue team also went undefeated, losing only one set the entire tournament. The 17 blue boys met the Spectrum 17s in the final and secured the win 25-13, 25-23.

Balboa Bay 15 Blue lost a total of two sets in its run to the 15 Open championship. In the final versus NV Elite 15, the 15 Blue squad won 25-22, 25-23.

The 14 Open victor, Balboa Bay 14 Blue had Bryce Dvorak dishing up sets for its hitters and leading the team to an undefeated junior nationals performance. A solid straight-set victory (25-18, 25-14) in the final over SCVC capped the 14 Blue team’s trip to Dallas.

Balboa Bay 14 White steamrolled through its competition in the 14 Club division until it reached the championship match. UVS 14 M from Puerto Rico surprised the 14 White squad, coming back and winning the second set after 14 White won the first and pushing the title match to three. Balboa Bay ultimately triumphed, however, winning the match 25-20, 17-25, 17-15.
