PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Dalton Bolon | Charleston

Bolon averaged 18.5 points and 4.5 rebounds on 50% shooting and 50% from three in a 2-0 week for No. 22 Charleston. The Ohioan scored 16 points in 26 minutes and added five rebounds in the Cougars’ 71-69 victory on Wednesday at UNCW before tallying 21 points and four rebounds while going 6-of-11 from three to help Charleston pull away from an upset-minded Elon squad. Bolon was Charleston’s leading scorer in both contests on the week.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Charlie Williams | William & Mary

Williams rose to the occasion in William & Mary’s 69-67 victory in Wilmington on Saturday with 15 points – three off his career total entering the game – in 14 minutes of action for a Tribe frontcourt battling foul and injury challenges. The 6-10 forward from Indiana was nearly automatic at the free-throw line, going 11-for-12 at the stripe while adding two field goals, four rebounds, and one assist.

NEWS AND NOTES

RECORD YEAR

No. 18 Charleston is 19-1 following Monday’s victory with a win total (19), win percentage (.959) and winning streak (18) that lead the nation. 

The Cougars are the first CAA team in the AP poll since 1987, 6-1 against last year’s NCAA Tournament field and 4-0 against defending conference champions (A10, ACC, CAA, SoCon). 

The Cougars are the first mid-major to win the Charleston Classic, as they captured the title in November with a victory over Virginia Tech. 

Charleston’s resume also includes wins over Kent State and UNCW, with the lone setback at preseason No. 1 North Carolina.

AGGIES ON THE RISE

North Carolina A&T has won its last three games to improve to 4-3 in CAA play. 

The streak includes comeback wins over Elon and Stony Brook, followed by a victory at Hampton on Monday. 

The Aggies have won three of their first four road games in the CAA, with wins at Hofstra, Elon and Hampton.

Q&A 

CAA teams hold 11 wins that qualify as Quad 1 or Quad 2 in the NET. 

UNCW’s victory over North Texas in the Bahamas puts a Q1 win on the Seahawks résumé, while Hofstra has three Q2 wins (Iona, San Jose State, Princeton), Charleston (Kent State, Virginia Tech, UNCW) has three and Delaware (Princeton), Towson (UNCG), North Carolina A&T (Hofstra) and William & Mary (UNCW) each have one.

The CAA went 6-2 against the Sun Belt and MAAC, 8-3 against the A10 and 7-3 against the SoCon, in addition to wins over the ACC and American.

HAWK YEAH

UNCW is 15-5 on the year, with three of its five setbacks to teams that have been in the AP Top 25 this season, and 4-of-5 to teams in the top 50 of the NET. 

The Seahawks have climbed 89 spots in KenPom, won the Baha Mar Hoops event and defeated a member of The American since the beginning of the program-record 13-game winning streak from Nov. 21 to Jan. 7.

DREXEL GETTING DEFENSIVE

Drexel’s 59.6 points per game allowed ranks 12th nationally, and the Dragons have held their opponents under 60 in all 10 victories, with two opponents - UT Arlington and Monmouth - kept under 40. 

The Dragons allowed 54.5 points per game in their first six league contests.

• Charleston’s 19 wins, .950 winning percentage and 18-game winning streak lead the nation.

• Jyáre Davis has scored in double figures for Delaware in 18-of-19 games this season and has 12 games of 15+ points.

• Drexel’s 59.6 points per game allowed ranks 12th nationally. The Dragons have held two opponents under 40 points and nine under 60.

• Elon’s Max Mackinnon had his second double-double of the year, with 17 points and 13 rebounds at No. 18 Charleston on Saturday.

• Hampton is in a stretch of six out of nine games at home, which comes after playing 10 of its first 14 contests on the road.

• Hofstra’s next victory will be its 100th since the start of the 2018-2019 season, a feat achieved by only 39 programs in the country through Monday’s results.

• Jack Collins (4.10) and Jakari Spence (3.74) give Monmouth two players in the top 4 in the CAA in steal percentage.

• North Carolina A&T players have been the leading vote-getter on the CAA Player of the Night fan balloting after each of the Aggies’ four wins this season.

• UNCW assisted on 14-of-17 made baskets in Monday’s victory. The 17 made field goals were the fewest in a Seahawk victory since recording 17 in an overtime win at Charleston in 2016.

• Northeastern erased a 16-point deficit to come back and win Monday.

• Stony Brook’s Frankie Policelli tallied his league-leading sixth and seventh double-doubles of the season last week with a pair of 16-point, 14-rebound performances.

• Towson’s Nicolas Timberlake has made at least one 3-pointer in each of his last 18 games.

• Charlie Williams scored 15 points in 14 minutes in William & Mary’s Saturday win over UNCW. The freshman entered the game with 18 career points.
