According to Madison.com, Wisconsin sophomore outside hitter Molly Haggerty will redshirt the 2017 season to completely recover from back surgery.

Haggerty herniated a disk in her lower back during the 2016 season, and had surgery in January. Despite being cleared to do light workouts in early August and gradually adding in more activity, the reigning Big Ten freshman of the year has not yet returned to full form. Head coach Kelly Sheffield said she's still 2.5 to three inches away from where her vertical was last year.

"If we didn't have the depth that we have she'd be playing, there'd be no question about it," Sheffield told Madison.com.

Without Haggerty on the floor, seniors Kelli Bates and Lauryn Gillis are the Badgers' starting outsides. Bates is tied with freshman middle Dana Rettke for a team-high 143 kills, while Gillis, who herself suffered with some injuries early on, has tallied 74 kills.

After the news broke, Haggerty said this on Twitter: "Excited for this opportunity to train and come back stronger than ever. Even more excited to see this team grow and dominate this season."
