Whether the breakup was amicable or messy, it's bound to be a battle when former beach volleyball partners match up across the net from each other.

For the first time since parting ways earlier this year, Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross are facing off in pool play of the 2017 World Series of Beach Volleyball in Long Beach, CA, today at 10:50 AM PT. The duo played together from 2013 through the start of the 2017 season, qualifying for the 2016 Rio Olympics and winning bronze.

Walsh Jennings and Ross last lined up across the net from each other during semifinals of the 2013 AVP Cincinnati Open. Walsh Jennings had partnered with Whitney Pavlik, and Ross was playing one of her final AVP tournaments with former partner Jen Kessy. Walsh Jennings and Pavlik won this particular meeting, but the match went to three sets, 19-21, 21-16, 15-10.

In their four-year partnership, Walsh Jennings and Ross played in 13 AVP tournaments, winning the title in all but one. That sole non-championship performance was at the 2013 Huntington Beach Open, their second AVP tournament together. On the international tour, they played in 32 tournaments, taking home 11 gold medals, three silver, and three bronze.

The dream team's breakup occurred in May of this year, as a result of Walsh Jennings' boycott of the AVP tour and refusal to sign the organization's player contract.

Walsh Jennings is now playing with 38-year-old Olympian Nicole Branagh, and the pair has declared its intention to pursue qualification for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Ross has formed a partnership with Lauren Fendrick, who went to the Rio Olympics with Brooke Sweat.
