There was a lot on the line in the series between the Long Beach State and BYU men’s volleyball teams in Provo, Utah. The team with a better performance overall in the two matches will mostly likely host the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation conference tournament next month.

With BYU winning the first match in five, and Long Beach State taking the second in three, the 49ers will host the conference semis and finals, as long as they win their final conference match, or if BYU loses a match before the end of the regular season.

In the first match of the LBSU-BYU series on Friday night, BYU’s senior outside hitter Jake Langlois led the Cougars to a five-set victory  (20-25, 26-24, 25-20, 21-25, 17-15)  with a season-high 20 kills along with 10 digs.

On Saturday, Long Beach State came to play, hitting .477 as a team on its way to a 3-0 sweep (25-21, 25-22, 25-21). Sophomore outside TJ DeFalco led all scorers with 13 kills, while LBSU’s second outside Kyle Ensing hammered home 10.

BYU’s First Team All-American right side hitter Ben Patch played briefly in both matches, coming in at the very end of the first match and adding seven kills on 11 attempts on Saturday night. The junior has been dealing with an injury and hadn’t seen the court in quite some time. Those seven kills put Ben Patch over 1,000 in his BYU career--he’s only the seventh BYU men’s player to hit that mark in the rally-scoring era.

Long Beach State will play Concordia (a non-conference opponent) and Cal State Northridge this week to finish out the regular season. BYU finishes the regular season conference play with back-to-back matches versus UC Santa Barbara.
