For most of the second half of the season, it was about the possibility of going 50-0 and winning the Texas Class 6A state title that had the girls' volleyball team of Conroe's Oak Ridge sitting at the top of the ASICS Flo50 national rankings.

That possibility disappeared in a hurry in last week's semifinals as defending champion Hebron of Lewisville knocked off the War Eagles in straight sets and then repeated as champion with a straight set triumph over Clear Creek of League City.

With Oak Ridge falling, previous No. 2 Mother McAuley of Chicago has moved up to No. 1 in this week's Flo50 and likely will stay there when final rankings are released on Thursday, Dec. 8.

Hebron, which moved up from No. 15 to No. 7 in this week's rankings, topped Oak Ridge by scores of 25-16, 25-13, and 25-23. The Hawks received 43 assists from Oregon State-bound setter Kylee McLaughlin and 14 kills from Minnesota recruit Adanna Rollins. They won in the final vs. Clear Creek in three straight 25-20 games.

State tournaments also concluded in New York, Michigan, New Jersey, and a few other states.

In New York, Penfield completed a perfect 47-0 season and clinched at least a No. 16 final ASICS Flo50 ranking by topping defending champion Connetquot 20-25, 27-25, 25-12, 25-20 in the Class AA state final. Tourney MVP Alea Steigerwald had a great match with 43 assists and 13 digs.

In Michigan, Novi wasn't perfect this season but almost was and finished 52-1 after defeating Rockford 25-23, 20-25, 25-22, 25-22 for the Class A state crown. The Wildcats will also be no lower than No. 13 in the final rankings.

The main reason that the rankings aren't yet final is because there are still two weekends to go in the California Interscholastic Federation state playoffs. The first-ever CIF Open Division state semifinals will take place on Tuesday of next week and will see Flo50 No. 2 Santa Margarita take on new No. 10 Santa Fe Christian of Solana Beach plus ASICS Flo50 No. 4 Archbishop Mitty of San Jose meet No. 31 St. Ignatius of San Francisco. Previous No. 4 Mater Dei of Santa Ana was defeated in this week's quarterfinals by Santa Fe Christian.

New No. 29 Torrey Pines (San Diego, California) also was able to make a big jump this week partly due to the success of Santa Fe Christian, another San Diego area school, in the first-ever CIF Open Division playoffs. The Falcons lost in the San Diego Section playoffs to the Eagles, then they beat previous ASICS Flo50 No. 26 Mira Costa in the Southern California Open Division playoffs before losing to No. 2 Santa Margarita in last Tuesday's quarterfinals.
