Opening day of the 2016 NCAA women's volleyball season is exactly one month away (August 26). Some top programs open the season with a bang by playing another top-10 opponent, and others start slow by challenging a team they're confident of defeating.
Here are the matches we will watch on opening day, and then below, we included a more comprehensive list of the opening-day action.
Nebraska vs. Florida, 7 PM ET, Eugene, Oregon
The reigning national champion Nebraska will face perpetual top contender Florida at the Vert Challenge, hosted by Oregon. These two teams haven't faced off since 2010's Runza/AVCA Showcase preseason tournament, where Florida won in five sets. But it's been six years since that match, and each team is now made up of entirely different groups of athletes, so it's anyone's game.
Hawaii vs. Wisconsin, 1 AM ET, Honolulu, Hawaii
For Wisconsin fans watching from home, this match should be well worth the struggle to stay awake until midnight Central Time. The highlight of the Chevron Rainbow Wahine Invitational, this match will pit Hawaii's group of rising stars against Wisconsin's team of veterans. Wisconsin setter Lauren Carlini will no doubt be looking to kick off her senior season with a victory.
Texas vs. Oregon, 10 PM ET, Eugene, Oregon
Another Vert Challenge matchup, this battle between Texas and Oregon will be a rematch of the 2012 National Championship. Texas graduated two starters from its 2015 roster that helped it finish as the national runner-up, but will benefit from the return of Ebony Nwanebu, who was injured most of last year, and the addition of yet another excellent recruiting class. This will be the first test for Oregon's group of newcomers, which is arguably one of best classes in the nation.
Wichita State vs. Creighton, 5 PM ET, Ames, Iowa
These two mid-major programs have been on the cusp of greatness for a few years now, and the winner of this preseason battle will establish an upper hand in the Midwest and receive a valuable confidence boost. These two teams played twice in 2014, with each team winning one of the meetings.
USC vs. Marquette, 11 PM ET, Los Angeles, California
In this season opener, the USC Trojans will look to prove they can still compete without AVCA Player of the Year outside hitter Samantha Bricio as reigning Gatorade Player of the Year Khalia Lanier makes her debut. Marquette would receive a huge boost if they were to pull an upset here before traveling to tournaments at Wichita State and Kentucky.
