Recruiting Solutions: Body Language
Throughout the recruiting process, we put so much emphasis on making contact with college coaches through email, phone and in person that we often forget to discuss body language. It is so important to display a positive attitude, whether you are on the court, on the sidelines, in a time out or even walking around the convention center.

A few years ago, I sat with a college coach who was evaluating a student-athlete for his program. During each time-out, the athlete walked off the court, grabbed her water bottle and then made her way over to the coach. She never made eye contact with her coach and occasionally rolled her eyes or just laughed with teammates instead of listening to the coach. This lack of respect cost her a full scholarship at a Division I program.

Keep these tips in mind whenever you play in a tournament or match:

    • Always make eye contact with coaches, parents and teammates.
    • During timeouts, have a teammate bring the water to players on the court (make sure you take turns). This way, you can listen to the important information your coach has to share.
    • Don't cross your arms! It makes you look angry and disrespectful.
    • High-five teammates, and be encouraging! Cheer for your teammates while on the sidelines.
    • If you are a sub, stay alert on the bench and be ready to go in.
    • When walking around the convention center or gym, be polite and treat others with respect--especially your parents! There is nothing worse than a coach observing you argue with mom or dad.
