Recruiting Solutions: How To Ace The Phone Call
This week, we're going to discuss how to prepare for recruiting phone calls. This seems to be one of the biggest areas of concern for most student-athletes as they go through the recruiting process. It's normal to feel overwhelmed and even intimidated, but with some preparation, you can use your phone conversations with college coaches to stand out among their lists of recruits.

Questions To Expect

Any college coach you speak with on the phone will probably ask you about your GPA, test scores, potential major, what you're looking for in your college experience and why you're interested in the particular school or program. I highly encourage you to spend some time on the school's website before your call. Go over the bio of the coach ahead of time and pick out some things that interest you about the school. Remember, no one expects you to have your entire life planned out. If you haven't decided on a potential major, you can identify some things that interest you and talk to the coach about being really open-minded.

What To Ask

You should prepare some questions to ask the coach. I love my clients to begin with, "What's a day in the life of one of your athletes like, both during the season and in the off-season?" This is a really good question for you use to break the ice, get a feel for the personality of the coach, and learn what they expect from their athletes.

You can also ask, "How would you describe your coaching style?" and "What are you looking for in a recruit?" But by far, the most important question for you to ask is, "What are your expectations of me moving forward?" Find out how often they want to hear from you, what kinds of video clips they would like to see and what they want you to do so you can stand out from the competition. Following through on each of these requests will help keep you at the top of the coach's recruiting list and allow you to tailor your recruiting process to fit each program.
