Russian super-spiker Ekaterina Gamova announced her retirement earlier today. The 6-8, 35-year-old opposite helped lead Russia to Olympic silver medals in 2000 and 2004, as well as World Championship gold medals in 2006 and 2010.

Following the quarterfinal loss to Brazil in the 2012 Olympics, Gamova announced she would take a break from competing with the national team. But two years later, she accepted head coach Yuriy Marichev’s invitation to return to the team for the 2014 World Championships.

Gamova enjoyed a decorated club career as well, winning eight Russian League titles and competing the last few years with Dinamo Kazan.

“I can’t take part in the Olympics due to a health condition,” she said on Match TV. “The decision was made in the last couple of days. There was a talk with a coach about it. That was a tough decision, but I believe it’s the only right for me right now because I thought it through. It has been also long-discussed whether or not should I take part in pre-Olympic preparation sessions. There was a coach counsel. For the coach, it was also a tough decision to make.”
