2017 Flo50 Girls' High School Volleyball Rankings

Texas, Cali, Arizona & Indiana Upsets Rock Rankings

The top five teams from last week’s national rankings didn’t change, but previous No. 6 The Woodlands of Texas played on Tuesday night of this week and lost to nationally ranked league rival Oak Ridge of Conroe, Texas.

Oak Ridge, the frontrunner in Texas all last season until the class 6A state semifinals, topped The Woodlands 25-21, 20-25, 20-25, 25-20, 15-8. The War Eagles, who were No. 33 in the Flo50 last week, were itching to get a win against the Highlanders after losing twice to them earlier in the season.

Carly Graham had a great night setting and hitting for Oak Ridge. She finished with 15 kills and 46 assists. Teammate Natalie Martin added 19 kills.

There also was a chance that No. 3 Mater Dei of Santa Ana, California, might've fallen on Tuesday night as well, but the Monarchs came back to beat league rival Santa Margarita in a five-game match. It was the third of possibly five matches between the two nationally ranked powerhouses and now Mater Dei has won twice. Scores were 25-18, 20-25, 14-25, 25-23, 15-11. Natalie Berty led head coach Dan O’Dell’s squad with 22 kills.

Santa Margarita, which was No. 10 in last week’s Flo50 and has been No. 1 in California this season, also lost in the title game at the California Challenge tourney in San Diego over the weekend. The Eagles were beaten in that match by host Torrey Pines 25-18, 25-21.

In winning, Torrey Pines moved in front of Santa Margarita in this week’s state and national rankings. That result also helped Archbishop Mitty of San Jose, California, move up since the Monarchs have a split with Torrey Pines and were the winners in the second of those two matches.

Arizona and Indiana also had some shuffling that impacted the Flo50.

In Arizona, previous No. 8 Xavier College Prep of Phoenix beat previous No. 9 Corona del Sol for a second time, but then got upset by Mountain Pointe. Both teams dropped five positions this this week and Mountain Pointe was chosen as a newcomer to the rankings.

In Indiana, previous No. 17 Yorktown and previous No. 24 Avon both lost. Avon lost to a Zionsville team that had to be ranked higher this week. The next Indiana team that had to go into the Flo50, however, was newcomer Providence of Clarksville. That team’s only loss is to Mercy of Louisville, Kentucky, which has six losses but has played a much stronger schedule. Mercy lost last week, but that was No. 6 Assumption, also of Louisville.
