A Celebration In Boys' Rankings
By Mark Tennis
It’s always a celebration of sorts when there aren’t many changes in weekly national high school rankings because that means there are less tricky decisions that need to be made.
In this week’s Flo50 national boys volleyball rankings, it’s also a celebration since one of three newcomers happens to be from Celebration High of Celebration, Florida.
We don’t know if the Storm plays the famous Kool and the Gang song after every win, but they got a good one last week against previous Flo50 No. 34 Lake Nona of Orlando and started this week with 10 wins in their last 11 matches with the only loss in that stretch coming to unbeaten and No. 5 Freedom, also of Orlando. Joudiel Poveymirow hammered away for 21 kills to lead Celebration, which broke into this week’s rankings at No. 43.
There could have been big changes this week if No. 1 Punahou of Honolulu had lost, but the Buff ‘N Blu kept on winning despite three major challenges.
One of the three was against a Huntington Beach squad on spring break traveling to the islands that was No. 1 in the nation in 2014 and 2015. Punahou won that match 3-0.
The Buff ‘N Blu also happened to face perhaps their top two challengers from their home state, and both KS School of Kea’au and Iolani of Honolulu gave them some trouble. Two of the three games against KS School were won by 26-24 scores while Iolani actually won the second game 25-23 after losing the first 25-13. Although Iolani went on to lose 25-17 and 25-15 in games three and four, it is a sign that there might be cracks in Punahou’s armor.
