It didn’t come easy -- the Tigers had to go all the way to five sets to take down NC State 14-25, 25-22, 15-25, 26-24, 15-9.
Once again, Auburn’s senior setter Alexa Filley spread the love, guiding Gwyn Jones to a season-high 14 kills, Shaina White to 12, and Brenna McIlroy to 11. White had a career night defensively, scoring five blocks.
NC State’s freshman right side Melissa Evans led the match with 20 kills hitting .341. Senior outside hitter Julia Brown added 18.
“Tonight’s match showed that this team has a lot of maturity,” Auburn head coach Rick Nold said. “They found themselves in tough situations and found ways to fight their way out. This was a big tournament for us against great competition. We’ve learned a lot about ourselves on this trip.”
The second match of the night pitted No. 1 Florida against No. 15 North Carolina. With 11.5 blocks and 50 digs, Florida held UNC to a .109 hitting percentage and won in straight sets 25-17, 25-17, 25-23.
Carli Snyder led the match with 11 kills, but Shainah Joseph was the most efficient, tallying eight kills and one hitting error for a .538 percentage.
With the victory, Florida leaves Puerto Rico 2-0 at the SEC vs. ACC Challenge and 4-0 for the season. North Carolina falls to 0-4.
