To replace retired longtime men's volleyball head coach Marv Dunphy, the Pepperdine athletic department only had to look down the hall to the office of associate head coach David Hunt.

A 10-year veteran on the Waves' staff, Hunt was promoted to head coach on Monday following Dunphy's retirement announcement last month.

Hunt joined the Pepperdine staff in 2007, serving as a video coordinator and volunteer assistant. He earned a promotion to assistant head coach in 2010 and became the associate head coach in 2014.

"[Hunt] is one of the most talented coaches in the sport, with extensive collegiate, national and international volleyball experience," Pepperdine athletic director Dr. Steve Potts said in a statement. "Having served Pepperdine men's volleyball for 10 years under the direction and guidance of Marv Dunphy, David is uniquely positioned and prepared to lead our team."

In addition to his time at Pepperdine, Hunt has worked with the U.S. women's national team since 2014, including traveling to the 2016 Rio Olympics as the team's consultant coach. He also served as a head coach for the national team at the 2014 NORCECA World Championship Qualification Tournament and the 2015 Pan-American Cup.

Hunt's coaching resume also includes working as an assistant coach for the Japan men's national team, assistant coach for the U.S. boys' youth national team, assistant coach for the U.S. men's junior national team, and technical coordinator for the U.S. men's national team.
