Cal Head Volleyball Coach Rich Feller Retires After 18 Years
Cal head women's volleyball coach Rich Feller announced his retirement after 18 years with the Golden Bears.
We thought the last domino had fallen when former Nebraska assistant Chris Tamas filled the vacated head coaching position at Illinois. Then we thought the replacement of Oregon coaches Jim Moore and Stacey Metro by their former assistant Matt Ulmer would be the last big change for Power Five volleyball programs.
Then, this morning, we heard the news that Cal women's volleyball coach Rich Feller is retiring after 18 seasons at the Pac-12 school. Associate head coach Matt McShane will serve as interim head as Cal conducts a search for a permanent replacement.
"I just feel like this is the right time," Feller, a two-time AVCA National Coach of the Year who leaves Cal with a record of 329-229, said. "Coaching is a noble profession and I am thankful to have had the opportunity to coach for so long. I have my health, intend to stay active and am looking forward to what comes next."
In 2002, Feller's third year at Cal, he led the Golden Bears to their first NCAA tournament in 13 years. Feller's squads made the final four in 2007, the national championship match in 2010, and appeared in the round of 16 six times.
"I'll be around," Feller said. "Stacey and I will buy season tickets. I am looking forward to sitting in the stands and watching these amazing young women gel as collegiate athletes and teammates."
