Coach Ron Kordes led his Assumption High School girls' volleyball team to a victory over St. Joseph's Academy of St. Louis in the semifinals of the Ultra Ankle Louisville Invitational Volleyball Tournament on Sunday, September 11.

Kordes has celebrated many wins with his Rockets over the years, including 19 state championships, but this victory marked a special milestone for the 68-year-old coach and patriarch of Kentucky volleyball. It was his 1,000th win at the helm of the Assumption program.

The owner of KIVA volleyball club and father of University of Louisville head coach Anne Kordes, Ron Kordes took over the Assumption volleyball program in 1988. The Rockets won their first state championship in 1992, and then won eight in a row from 1995-2002. Kordes coached the 2012 Prep Volleyball Player of the Year, Katie George, who went on to set at Louisville, and the 2013-14 Gatorade Player of the Year, Alexa Filley, who is a junior setter at Auburn.

Kordes cherished reaching the 1,000th-win mark at home in Louisville, even though his team ended up being defeated by fellow Louisville squad Sacred Heart in the LIVT final. Both Kentucky teams are ranked in the top 20 nationally by the USA Today Sports Super 25 ranking, and they will both travel to Las Vegas later this week for the Durango Fall Classic.
